Choosing a School
How Do You Know what School is Best for You?
In this day and age the options for culinary schools are truly mind boggling. With so many choices how can you make the one that is right for you? The first thing is really deciding what it is that you want to do when you are done.
Cooking Classes
Some jobs require only basic cooking classes or life experience. The type of job that you could expect with this level of education is that of a short order cook or a line cook. Short order cooking generally involves preparing a limited number of simple items. A line cook may work in a restaurant with a more extensive menu but they have only one specific function. Line cooks are supervised by those possessing culinary degrees.
Culinary Certificates
Many cooking classes or courses may supply a certificate upon completion. These certificates are often pursued by chefs who have culinary degrees but wish to gain specific knowledge or expertise in a specific type of food preparation. A pastry chef, a baker, or a catering business owner may have this type of educational certificate.
Culinary Degrees
As the level of education you have in the culinary arts increases so does the level of your position in the kitchen. Those with degrees are often supervisors of sections or of the entire kitchen. Having a degree in cooking is a very good move for anyone considering becoming a restaurateur. Even though you are self employed and can therefore determine your own need for accreditation, an education will give you more benefits than you can imagine in the establishment of a successful business. Those with doctoral degrees tend to be those who impact food and beverage consciousness at the highest level. These are the creators of food guides and reputable dietary writings.
So you see, the options are there… the choice is yours.
