Should You go to Cooking School
Is the culinary arts world for me?
Is there a right time for making this career choice?
There are many times during your life when you can find yourself contemplating a new career path. You traditionally think of high school graduation as the time that this type of thinking is usually done. Times have changed and there are now more options available for people to make life changes or career switches many times over the courses of their lives.
Why are culinary schools so popular?
It is true that the enrollment in culinary arts schools and colleges is higher now than ever before. Some of the reason behind this explosion of interest in an age-old occupation is the shift in cultural thinking. Many countries have had many lifestyle shifts in the last few decades. One major one is the occurrence of both parents in most families working full time. The result this has had on the food industry is to cause a huge increase in the amount that people eat outside of the home or purchase prepared foods to take home. Another fueling factor for the popularity of culinary schools is that travel has become a much more prominent part our lives.
Would it be a wise choice for me?
Begin by asking yourself if you really have an interest in food or food preparation. There are many careers in the culinary field that don't require you to cook. Management positions often don't require cooking skills at all but rather depend on strong organizational and interpersonal skills. A wise exercise for you would be to spend some time looking at cooking journals, cook books, watching cooking shows, or surfing the Internet for culinary sites. You should get an idea of your interest level through these activities. After all, it matters little how popular a field is, if you don't enjoy it, it isn't for you.
